Too many people today are living in constant turmoil. They’re often upset about something or finding some reason why they cannot be happy. Many people today are not enjoying their lives simply because they do not know how to rule over their emotions. In other words, they’re allowing their emotions to get the best of them. If we are going to truly enjoy life then we need to learn how to keep our emotions in check and learn how to stay at peace.

We also need to understand that there is an enemy who wants nothing more than to keep us in constant turmoil. His goal is for us to spend our whole lives upset, bitter, and negative. Therefore, we need to recognize this and be willing to make the necessary changes to stay at peace. For instance, the next time you start feeling yourself getting upset, you need to put your foot down and decide that you’re going to keep your peace. You need to make a decision that you’re not going to let your emotions get the best of you. King David knew this and wrote this in Psalms 103:1, “Bless the Lord O my soul; and all that is within me, bless his holy name. {2} Bless the Lord, O my soul. And forget Not all his benefit; {3} Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all they diseases, {4} Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; {5} Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” (Also see these meditation scriptures: John 14:1 and Matthew 6:25-34).

I’d also like to encourage you to identify those things in your life that tend to cause you to get upset and lose your joy. The first step to overcoming anything is to recognize what those things are and then be willing to make the necessary adjustments to deal with them. For example, some people get upset when they don’t get enough rest and many times that has been an area of weakness in my life. As a result, I’ve had to take the necessary precautions to get the proper rest that I need. I’m also fully aware that when people feel over-worked and worn out they’re more likely to get irritated, make poor decisions, and say things they usually regret later.

On the other hand, you may be getting the proper amount of rest but you may be drinking a lot of pop or eating a lot of junk food and that may be the reason why you can’t relax and enjoy your life. Or you may be the type of person who gets all upset every time you have to pay your bills, mow the lawn, or clean the house. You can either have that attitude the rest of your life or you can recognize what is happening and make a decision that you’re not going to let these things steal your joy anymore. You have to find out what is causing you to “stress out” and then deal with it.

I’ve heard it said that some people who say mean and hurtful things aren’t really confident in themselves. It’s done in such a way that they make others look bad so that they look good. This also needs to be addressed if they are to learn to enjoy their life.

So I want to challenge you not to give into any type of temptation that will cause you to lose your peace. Even if it looks like the bottom has dropped out of your life let me encourage you to keep a smile on your face and a spring in your step. Do not make a big deal out of the little things in life. It’s like the old saying goes, “Don’t sweat the small stuff; and it’s all small stuff.” Yet that is where so many people miss it. They want to magnify all those little obstacles. They want to blow all those little things way out of proportion or they act like everything is a major crisis. But again, let me encourage you not to be like that. Really, life is way too short to live it all stressed out.

So let me challenge you to make a decision to stay at peace no matter what comes against you. Learn to relax. Learn to keep your peace because the more peaceful you are the more you’re going to enjoy life! And always remember, if you’ll do your part, God will do His, and that is when you’ll live that abundant “Life in Christ.”
